Tenant Insurance

Tenant Insurance

Protect yourself and your stuff with tenant insurance.

Why do I need tenant insurance?

Most landlords require tenant insurance for all lease agreements – but there’s a much simpler reason for why you need it. Tenant insurance provides personal liability coverage, contents coverage for personal items in your rental, and more.

If you have a claim, tenant insurance will kick-in to replace or repair your unit and the personal belongings that make your rental uniquely yours.

What does tenant insurance cover?

Standard coverages

Tenant Liability

If someone is injured at your apartment or rental unit or their property is damaged, you will be covered in the event of a resulting lawsuit.

Covers replacing the things in the unit that you own. Your furniture, electronics, clothing, appliances, and more. Your contents limit should reflect the replacement value of your belongings.

Additional Living Expenses

If you have to temporarily move out of your rental unit or apartment due to a claim, hotel costs, additional meals, travel expenses, and other additional expenses may be covered.

Additional coverages

Water Protection

Sewer back-up coverage provides protection from sudden and accidental back up of sewers, toilets, drains, etc. Overland water coverage protects your rental from sudden freshwater accumulation. Always check your policy wordings – coverage is subject to eligibility.

Claim Forgiveness

This coverage “forgives” your first claim and allows you to keep your claims-free discount. This forgiveness applies as long as you are insured with the same company as when you experienced the claim.

Frequently Asked Questions.

Isn’t my rental unit covered by the Landlord’s building insurance?

This is a common misconception – the landlord does have insurance that protects their interests, such as the building and any structures or items belonging to the landlord or rental company. Unfortunately, their policy does not cover your belongings, protect you if someone is injured in your rental unit, or provide you with a place to stay if your unit in not able to be lived in due to a claim – that is why you need tenant insurance!

Why do I need tenant insurance?

Tenant insurance can protect you in many ways – it’s not just something to get your landlord off your back!

By carrying tenant insurance, you protect yourself and your stuff in case something happens. While your landlord’s insurance may cover the building structure, it does not protect your personal belongings or provide liability coverage for accidents that may occur inside your rented space.

Tenant insurance offers financial protection in case of theft, fire, or other covered events, as well as liability coverage in case someone gets injured while visiting your rented property. You can even opt to have your tenant insurance cover water damage – because while you may always turn the tap off, your upstairs neighbor may not!

How much tenant insurance coverage do I need?

The amount of tenant insurance coverage you need depends on the value of your personal belongings. It’s important to conduct a thorough inventory of your belongings and estimate their total value to ensure you have enough coverage. Our team can help you choose the right limits for your policy.

In addition to contents coverage, we can help you choose important optional coverages such as water coverage, sewer back up coverage, and more!

Can I bundle tenant insurance with other policies?

Yes! Many insurance companies offer bundling options where you can combine your tenant insurance with other policies such as car insurance. Bundling your policies together with Cheep can save you up to 15% on both policies!
